COINED
In November, 2008, a young volunteer from Denmark worked with us.
Gill and Julian sent this note about their experience with us:
Our experience with María de las Cárceles.
Gillian in the UK, November, 2007
We are Gillian y Julian from the UK. We worked with Maria
de las Cárceles in Buenos Aires for nearly four weeks in November, 2007. We really enjoyed the experience. We helped released men with their computers and workshop tasks. We talked about our country, our traditions, food, prisons and our experiences in other countries.
At times I taught them some English.
On other days we go to the penal unit and talk to the interns. The men are very friendly and we feel welcome. I believe it is very important for interns to learn about other ways of life and hear what life is like in other countries and societies. The men are very interested in us and ask a lot of questions. They are quite frank with us about their experience before incarceration and after, as well. They have told us about their difficulties outside and of their struggle not to return to crime. I have learned a few things about computers, some about life in prison and I have improved my Spanish. The most frustrating thing is that my Spanish is not that good. I would like to talk more with the young men but it is difficult for me and it is probably hard for them to understand me! I would like to have more time because it is necessary to develop relationships, trust, little by little. It is an important project with benefits for all – interns, released, their families, prisons, schools and society.
Middlebury College
In 2007, through Middlebury College, Simran Mackenna and Patrick Swan arrived to work with us.
